(1) Learn how to build and manage an economy.
Your economy is everything in this game. Learn the proper timing for upgrades and when to focus on unit production. If your enemy puts everything into upgrading quickly, they will likely have fewer units and defenses; so try focusing on attack unit production and hit them fast and early.
(2) No breaks for the enemy.
Try to never let your opponent rebuild or relax. Always keep pressure on them so that they focus more on you than their economy and upgrades.
(3) Be creative.
If you mix up the way you attack your enemy and make good use of your intelligence units and structures, you can always expose weaknesses in the enemy. Use different combinations of units to really dig into those weaknesses. Look, no air defenses at the rear of an enemy base; time to drop some bombs and transport some land units in to wreck havok!
(4) Which maps?
This depends on the type of player you are... If you like playing custom matches with just land/air units, then a map like Fields of Isis is a great map to play on. If you like to play in tournaments and compete, it might be a good idea to practice on a lot of different maps that include all units. Maybe you just like one map and want to become an expert at it; then be sure to pick a popular one that is always being played on.
